[...] Existem, aliás, experiências que são experiências enquanto estão presentes, mas sobre as quais não se pode refletir nada, ou somente através de uma apreensão extremamente vaga e cuja reprodução, a não ser por meio da noção puramente vazia de que “vivenciou-se alguma coisa” — em outras [64] palavras, ou de uma maneira clara — é impossível. Chamaremos esse grupo de experiências “essencialmente atuais”, porque elas são, por natureza, limitadas a uma determinada posição temporal dentro da corrente de consciência. São conhecidas por sua ligação ou proximidade com o âmago mais profundo do Ego, que Scheler muito bem definiu como “privacidade pessoal absoluta” (absolut intime Person) do indivíduo. Sabemos que a privacidade pessoal absoluta de uma pessoa está lá, e que ela permanece absolutamente fechada, sem permitir que outros indivíduos compartilhem sua experiência. Mas também no autoconhecimento existe uma esfera de intimidade absoluta cujo estar lá (Dasein) e tão indubitável quanto fechado à nossa inspeção. As experiências peculiares a essa esfera são simplesmente inacessíveis à memória, e esse é um fato característico de seu modo de ser: a memória só capta o “isso” dessas experiências. Talvez se possa reforçar a confirmação dessa tese (que aqui só pode ser afirmada, e não inteiramente provada) por meio de uma observação imediata: a reprodução adequada da experiência torna-se cada vez menos possível na medida em que esta se aproxima do âmago, da intimidade da pessoa. A consequência dessa função decrescente é uma reprodução cada vez mais vaga do conteúdo da experiência. Simultaneamente, diminui a possibilidade de recapitulação, isto é, a capacidade de reconstrução completa do curso da experiência. Quando ainda existe alguma possibilidade de reprodução, o máximo a que se pode chegar é a um simples ato de apreensão. O “Como” da experiência, no entanto, só pode ser reproduzido através da recapitulação. Pertencem a essa região, em primeiro lugar, não só todas as experiências da realidade física do Ego, ou, em outras palavras, do Ego Vital (tensões e relaxamentos musculares relacionados aos movimentos do corpo, dor “física”, sensações sexuais, e assim por diante), mas também os fenômenos psíquicos classificados em conjunto sob o título vago de “humores”, ou “sentimentos” e “afetações” (alegria, tristeza, [65] desgosto, etc.). Os limites da lembrança coincidem exatamente com os limites da “racionalidade”, desde que se use essa palavra ambígua — como o faz, às vezes, Max Weber — no seu sentido mais amplo, isto é, no sentido de “possibilidade de atribuir significado”. A possibilidade de recuperação pela memória é, de fato, o primeiro requisito de toda construção racional. Aquilo que é irrecuperável — em princípio, sempre algo inefável — só pode ser vivido, nunca “pensado”: é, em princípio, impossível de ser verbalizado.

[...] There are, as a matter of fact, experiences which are experiences when they are present but which either cannot be reflected upon at all or can be reflected upon only through an extremely vague apprehension and whose reproduction, apart from the purely empty notion of “having experienced something”—in other words, in a clear way—is quite impossible. We will call this group “essentially actual” experiences because they are by their very nature limited to a definite temporal position within the inner stream of consciousness. They are known by their attachment or closeness to that innermost core of the Ego which Scheler in a happy turn of phrase called the “absolute personal privacy” (absolut intime Person) of an individual. About the absolute personal privacy of a person we know both that it must necessarily be there and that it remains absolutely closed to any sharing of its experience with others. But also in self-knowledge there is a sphere of absolute intimacy whose “being there” (Dasein) is just as indubitable as it is closed to our inspection. The experiences peculiar to this sphere are simply inaccessible to memory, and this fact pertains to their mode of being: memory catches only the “that” of these experiences. For the confirmation of this thesis (which can only be stated here and not fully proved), an observation which can be performed immediately furnishes support, namely, that the reproduction becomes all the less adequate to the experience the nearer it comes to the intimate core of the person. This diminishing adequacy has in consequence an ever greater vagueness of reproduced content. Concomitantly, the capacity for recapitulative reproduction diminishes, that is, the capacity for the complete reconstruction of the course of the experience. As far as reproduction is possible at all, it can only be accomplished by a [65] simple act of apprehension. The “How” of the experience can, however, be reproduced only in recapitulative reconstruction. The recollection of an experience of the external world is relatively clear; an external course of events, a movement perhaps, can be recollected in free reproduction, that is, at arbitrary points of the duration. Incomparably more difficult is the reproduction of experiences of internal perception; those internal perceptions that lie close to the absolute private core of the person are irrecoverable as far as their How is concerned, and their That can be laid hold of only in a simple act of apprehension. Here belong, first of all, not only all experiences of the corporeality of the Ego, in other words, of the Vital Ego (muscular tensings and relaxings as correlates of the movements of the body, “physical” pain, sexual sensations, and so on), but also those psychic phenomena classified together under the vague heading of “moods,” as well as “feelings” and “affects” (joy, sorrow, disgust, etc.). The limits of recall coincide exactly with the limits of “rationalizability,” provided that one uses this equivocal word—as Max Weber does at times—in the broadest sense, that is, in the sense of “capable of giving a meaning.” Recoverability to memory is, in fact, the first prerequisite of all rational construction. That which is irrecoverable—and this is in principle always something ineffable—can only be lived but never “thought”: it is in principle incapable of being verbalized.
