Se eu puder mostrar que a Crítica da Razão Pura realmente pode ser resumida nessas teses, também terei justificado minha posição geral, a saber, que a visão de Kant parece oferecer uma teoria da experiência, mas realmente apresenta uma teoria da ciência, precisamente porque confunde os dois níveis. Isso pode parecer uma conclusão insignificante e desagradável, mas, a meu ver, tem a vantagem de definir economicamente o núcleo do pensamento de Kant, as causas de seu sucesso e as razões de sua relativa obsolescência após duzentos anos.

Concedida esta premissa, aqui estão as cinco teses ontológicas:

1. Tese sobre o espaço. “Por meio do sentido externo, uma propriedade de nossa mente, representamos para nós mesmos objetos como fora de nós, e todos sem exceção como no espaço.” Em outras palavras, há um recipiente, espaço, com três dimensões, que contém todos as coisas estendidas, dos átomos e moléculas para cima, e que as precedem.

2. Tese sobre o tempo. “Nem a coexistência nem a sucessão jamais entrariam em nossa percepção, se a representação do tempo não fosse [...] a priori.” Há outro contêiner, o tempo, que contém tudo o que está contido no contêiner espacial, além de outros objetos mais fugazes ( como lembranças e expectativas), existindo no tempo, mas não no espaço, e possuindo duração, mas não extensão.

3. Tese sobre Substância. “Em todas as mudanças de aparência, a substância é permanente.” Não aprendemos desta substância invariável desde o hábito, mas somos dotados de um conceito que precede a experiência e que nos ajuda a entender, por exemplo, que água, gelo e vapor são três estados de uma única substância. Sem o conceito, não chegaríamos aí.

4. Tese sobre Causa. “Todas as alterações ocorrem em conformidade com a lei da conexão de causa e efeito.” Aqui também, se não soubéssemos, antes de qualquer experiência, que o fogo faz a água ferver, apenas os sentidos não poderiam nos ensinar que ele o faz.

5. Tese sobre o Eu. “Deve ser possível que o “eu penso” acompanhe todas as minhas representações.” Há um ponto não estendido e imutável, não muito diferente do cogito cartesiano, mas um pouco mais elaborado, pois contém não apenas dúvidas, mas também os quatro anteriores pontos de espaço, tempo, substância e causa. Toda vez que tenho uma sensação ou um pensamento, o eu o registra e se refere a ele mesmo (estou com calor; vejo vermelho; estou pensando em Pégaso ou Napoleão). Se não o fizesse, as experiências e os pensamentos não se vinculariam a nada, como é o caso quando realizamos alguma ação, como fechar a porta, sem pensar nisto, e então não nos lembramos de tê-lo feito.

Cada uma dessas teses tem seu próprio objetivo: as teses sobre espaço e tempo são respostas a Leibniz e a George Berkeley (1685-1753), que consideravam o espaço e o tempo como resultado das relações entre objetos e não como formas a priori; que a substância visa corrigir John Locke (1632-1704), que considerou a substância um construto mental gerado pelo hábito; aqueles sobre causa e sobre o eu têm, como já observamos, Hume como alvo.

Mediadas pela tese sobre o eu, que é um sujeito conhecido e um objeto conhecido, as teses ontológicas se apoiam em duas teses epistemológicas.

1. A tese de esquemas conceituais. “Pensamentos sem conteúdo são vazios, intuições sem conceitos são cegos.” Kant foi o primeiro filósofo a sustentar que, para ter experiências, é necessário ter esquemas conceituais (idealismo transcendental); e ele foi provavelmente o primeiro – pelo menos entre os filósofos – a sustentar que apenas o que existe no espaço e no tempo existe (realismo empírico). O ponto crucial sobre a tese dos esquemas conceituais, que resume e possibilita as cinco teses ontológicas, é que não basta para ser capaz de ver ter olhos: precisamos de óculos para transformar a percepção desfocada e desordenada em experiências claras e coerentes. Esses espetáculos são os conceitos que são articulados em julgamentos dos quais as categorias seguem.

2. Esta tese está ligada a outra, a do Fenômeno, que resume o significado da revolução copernicana: “O objeto indeterminado de uma intuição empírica é intitulado fenômeno.” Não temos tráfego direto com coisas em si mesmas, mas apenas com objetos que nos aparecem através da mediação do espaço e do tempo (as formas puras da intuição e o aparato perceptivo que os carrega), do eu e dos esquemas ou categorias conceituais. No entanto, os fenômenos não são meras aparências, mas existem não menos do que o eu, que é conhecido apenas como um fenômeno.

If I can show that the Critique of Pure Reason really can be summed up in these theses, I shall also have vindicated my overall position, namely that Kant’s view seems to offer a theory of experience but really presents a theory of science, precisely because it confuses the two levels. This might seem a trifling and unappealing conclusion, but in my view it has the advantage of setting out economically the core of Kant’s thought, the causes of its success, and the reasons for its relative obsolescence after two hundred years.

Five ontological theses

Granted this premise, here are the five ontological theses:

1. Thesis about Space. “By means of outer sense, a property of our mind, we represent to ourselves objects as outside us, and all without exception as in space.”4 In other words, there is a container, space, with three dimensions, that contains all the extended things, from atoms and molecules upward, and that precedes them.

2. Thesis about Time. “Neither coexistence nor succession would ever come within our perception, if the representation of time were not […] a priori.”5 There is another container, time, that contains everything contained in the spatial container, plus other, more fleeting objects (such as memories and expectations), existing in time but not in space and possessing duration but not extension.

3. Thesis about Substance. “In all change of appearances substance is permanent.”6 We do not learn of this unvarying substance from habit, but we are endowed with a concept that precedes experience and that helps us understand, for instance, that water, ice, and steam are three states of a single substance. Without the concept, we would not get there.

4. Thesis about Cause. “All alterations take place in conformity with the law of the connection of cause and effect.”7 Here, too, if we did not know, prior to any experience, that fire makes water boil, the senses alone would be unable to teach us that it does.

5. Thesis about the Self. “It must be possible for the “I think” to accompany all my representations.”8 There is an unextended and unchanging point, not unlike the Cartesian cogito, but a little more elaborate inasmuch as it contains not only doubts but also the four foregoing points of space, time, substance, and cause. Every time I have a sensation or a thought, the self registers it and refers it to itself (I am hot; I see red; I am thinking of Pegasus or Napoleon). If it did not do so, the experiences and thoughts would attach to nothing, as is the case when we perform some action, such as shutting the door, without thinking about it, and then we can’t remember doing it.

Each of these theses has its own target: the theses about space and about time are responses to Leibniz and to George Berkeley (1685–1753), who regarded space and time as results of the relations among objects and not as a priori forms; that about substance aims to correct John Locke (1632–1704), who held substance to be a mental construct generated by habit; those about cause and about the self have, as we have already noted, Hume as their target.

Two epistemological theses

Mediated by the thesis about the self, which is both a knowing subject and a known object, the ontological theses rest upon two epistemological theses.

1. The thesis of Conceptual Schemes. “Thoughts without content are empty, intuitions without concepts are blind.”9 Kant was the first philosopher to maintain that, in order to have experiences, it is necessary to have conceptual schemes (transcendental idealism); and he was probably the first—at least among philosophers—to maintain that only what is in space and time exists (empirical realism).10 The crucial point about the thesis of conceptual schemes, which sums up and makes possible the five ontological theses, is that it is not enough to be able to see to have eyes: we need spectacles to turn unfocused and disorderly perception into clear and coherent experiences. These spectacles are the concepts that are articulated into judgments from which the categories follow.

2. This thesis is connected to another, that of the Phenomenon, which encapsulates the meaning of the Copernican revolution: “The undetermined object of an empirical intuition is entitled phenomenon.”11 We do not have direct traffic with things in themselves, but only with objects that appear to us through the mediation of space and time (the pure forms of the intuition and the perceptual apparatus that carries them), of the self and of the conceptual schemes or categories. Nevertheless, the phenomena are not mere appearances, but rather exist no less than the self does, which is itself known only as a phenomenon.12
